What is HVAC and What You Need To Know

Have you ever wondered what HVAC means and what kind of expertise it takes for quality HVAC repair? HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. These systems are responsible for heating and cooling your home, maintaining optimal humidity levels, and filtering out allergens and bacteria so your family stays healthy. In a nutshell, HVAC keeps everyone in your home, comfortable and Crystal Heating & Cooling is an  Authorized Carrier HVAC Dealer ready to serve you.

What is Ventilation?

Ventilation is the process that moves air in and out of the home through vents, doors, windows, fans and other openings. It pushes unpleasant things like odors, carbon dioxide, and moisture to the outside air, and draws in fresh air. It then has the important job of filtering out any dust, allergens, and other debris so they don’t blow through the air you breathe.

How Does a Heating and Cooling System Work?

HVAC Thermostats by Crystal Heating & Cooling

Once the air in your home is fresh and clean, it is sent to the furnace or air conditioning system to be heated or cooled. When the air is at a comfortable temperature, it moves through ducts and flows out of registers into your living space. The main components of a heating and cooling system are:

  • Thermostat. Usually installed on a wall near your main living area, it can be set manually or programmed to stay at the ideal temperature you feel is comfortable. If the air around the thermostat gets warmer or colder than the specified temperature, the thermostat sends a signal to the furnace or air conditioning system to kick on.
  • Furnace. The furnace heats air by using gas or electricity to blow warm air through ductwork. In an intermittent pilot system, an electronically controlled high-voltage electric spark ignites a pilot light and the main burners.  In a hot surface ignition system, an electronically controlled resistance heating element ignites the gas burner. A motor blower then blows the warm air through your ducts.
  • Evaporator coil. This is part of your air conditioning system, as it is used to cool the air when the thermostat is set to a lower temperature.
  • Condensing unit. Located outside the house, this unit is filled with refrigerant gas. After the refrigerant cools into liquid form, the condensing unit pumps it through refrigerant lines to the evaporator coil, where it transforms back into gas.
  • Vents: Vents help distribute conditioned air from the duct system into the rooms of your home. They're usually located near the ceiling with angled slats.

Reasons Why You May Need HVAC Repair

HVAC Repair by Crystal Heating & Cooling

As you can see, the HVAC system is complicated, and chances are you will need furnace or air conditioning service if something goes wrong with your system. Any of the following issues require the knowledge of a highly trained and licensed HVAC repair technician:

  • The furnace won’t light, indicating something is wrong with the ignition sensor.
  • There’s a strange sound coming from your furnace, which could mean a major component is starting to fail.
  • The air conditioning isn’t cooling the home to your desired temperature, meaning there may be a refrigerant leak.
  • The humidity level in your home is too high, causing mold growth or a musty smell. It could mean there’s a ventilation problem or an improperly sized air conditioning unit.
