Furnace Repair Problems: A Furnace That Won’t Light

In most cases when it comes to your commercial HVAC system, we recommend calling our furnace repair company for any issues you’re having. But if your furnace has quit and you can see that it’s because it won’t light, here are some things you can check before calling us.

Restore Power

If your heater isn’t receiving electrical power, it won’t light. Even a gas furnace needs electricity for igniters to work, so make sure a circuit hasn’t been tripped and if it has, flip it back on and see if your furnace comes on.

Reset the Thermostat

A storm or any other reason for a power failure can interrupt your programmable thermostat’s settings. So check that your thermostat has power, that it’s set on “heat” mode, and then raise the temperature to see if the furnace lights.

Check the Pilot Light

While some modern furnaces have an electronic ignition, many customers request our furnace repair services for older heaters that have a pilot light. If the pilot light has blown out for any reason, the furnace won’t ignite, so if you see that it’s out and don’t feel comfortable lighting it, call a furnace repair company.

Replace Your Air Filter

A very dirty, clogged furnace filter can cause the furnace to overheat. Check your filter and replace it if needed, then wait a few minutes to see if that fixes the furnace.

The Condensate Pan Is Full

If you have a high-efficiency furnace, it may produce mildly acidic condensation. A clogged condensate drain can cause the collection reservoir to fill with liquid, which can activate the float switch and shut off the furnace so water damage doesn’t occur. Check to see if the condensate pan is full, then empty it and unclog the drain if possible, though it’s best to call a furnace repair company to do this.
